CrossFit Running Certified – Pose Technique Level 1
I discovered CrossFit in June 2006 and started the workouts on my own in the park in the early morning hours. I was hooked right away. In January of 2008 I went to the old CrossFit Head Quarters in Santa Cruz, California and took the CrossFit Level I Trainer Certification and the search for all things CrossFit began. I’ve been lucky enough to get to Cert’s with Coach B (O. Lifting Cert.), the Martin’s (Kid’s Cert.) Tucker (Gymnastics), Brian MacKenzie (Endurance), Dr. Nicholas Romanov (Running – Pose Technique) and a host of other HQ trainers at various Level 1 and 2 Cert’s. Along the way I’ve gotten to help teach a couple times at Level 1 Cert’s to the Canadian Forces at CFB GageTown, the RCMP in Montreal and the eager masses in Toronto at Moss Park. What an amazing journey its been and its only beginning!
My previous fitness experience includes being a personal trainer as far back as the early 90’s in Toronto while going to Chiropractic College, working mostly with triathletes. I was a swim instructor, downhill skiing instructor, and I started my undergraduate education in Phys.Ed. before focusing my studies after two years to a biology degree in getting ready for chiropractic college. I graduated from St.F.X. in 1993 and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1997, and have been practicing in Charlottetown since that time.
I am the chiropractor at bodyworks, a multipi-disciplinary health clinic in downtown Charlottetown, and I work at the Souris Hospital once every three weeks to a month for the past twelve years.
My own sporting interests include being a former downhill ski racer, competitive swimmer, runner, high jumper and member of varsity soccer, basketball and water polo teams. When life allows, I am an avid golfer and scuba diver.

After learning about CrossFit in November of 2007 from Dave, we started to set up CrossFit PEI. I began training in January 08 after Dave got back from his Level 1 cert.
The initial CrossFit workouts were humbling but I began to see results in a very short period of time. I found that the the efficiency and effectiveness of the programming allowed for greater gains in strength, endurance and overall fitness in a shorter period of time. On top of that, it is a great community – I have never met a more supportive group of competitive people in my life.
I have been doing Taekwondo since 1987 and am a Fifth Degree Black Belt Master. I have taken a number of National Coaching Certification Program courses for both coaching and general instruction of adults and children. I am also a certified Level 1 Snowboard Instructor with the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors.

Drawn to CrossFit by good friends in the early summer of 2008, I quickly discovered that I had found the right conditioning program for me. I was intrigued instantly and felt like a little kid again trying the gymnastics components of CrossFit. I was instantly hooked on the Olympic lifts and the all-out intensity of the workouts. I was hungry for more knowledge and attended my Level 1 certification in January of 2009 in Toronto, quickly followed by the CF Endurance Certification in New York and the Gymnastics certification right here in PEI and have been a trainer at CFPEI since early March of 2009. I am drawn to CrossFit for three major reasons; the fantastic (and relentless) coaching, the community and the results. CrossFit offers the best of all of these worlds.
I quickly noticed results as measured by my other love…running. With less training miles, I was able to get faster and set personal best at all distances since starting CrossFit. I feel stronger running and many of my former ailments have disappeared. I am a desk jockey by day and this has created a fantastic way for me to keep fit and exercise the other half of my brain on a regular basis. I hope to learn as much as I can and when I am ready, tackle the coveted Level 2 certification.

I always felt that I had a good level of fitness, but I struggled with being able to lift significant weight or able to keep high cardio intensity. My goal was to be strong, but still be fast. While I always lifted weights, I also dabbled with other programs and tried running. I did get results, but nothing really clicked.
After my first CrossFit workout, I was humbled— and knew that I had found the right program for me. Beyond conditioning I wanted to move better, so I took queues from the other trainers and started looking into learning more. That is when I signed up for my Level 1 certification.
There are many skills to work on in CrossFit. So I signed up for a few more certs. I attended a Gymnastics certification with some of the other trainers—it was fun but also gave us a better perspective of the importance of body awareness. I then completed a Nutrition certification that focuses on health and athletic performance. Next, an Olympic-lifting certification, and I’ll keep going from there.
See you Mondays at 6:00 am!

After trying a number of different types of workouts, I was drawn to CrossFit by it’s efficiency (that plus Mike was already doing it). I find that I can get better workout in a shorter period of time.
While I have seen a number of benefits from CrossFit, one of the more significant was improving my running. Even though I never really enjoyed it (mainly because I sucked at it), I ended up running a leg in the PEI Marathon Corporate Relay team without any training for it – and actually enjoyed it.
As a teacher who works with younger kids, I could see the benefits that this kind of program would offer to them. So in August 2009, I went to Texas to take the CrossFit Kids cert. Building on what I had learned at my Level 1 and Gymnastics certs, I learned a great deal and started to help teach the Teens class.
